Why do people write this stuff?

October 16, 2002 - 9:18pm

This article against homosexuality is so typical of the university I attended. A stupid opinionated article making all students at the school look ignorant. (I'd like to point out to anyone who isn't familiar with Texas Tech and/or Lubbock - there really are liberal people there! Some of most amazing, progressive people I've known, I met in Lubbock.) It's really a shame that they print this stuff. It's controversy for controversy sake. And it's always been like that...there was always one editorial article a year on homosexuality printed in the paper. Every year. Disappointing.

So I commented on the article and got a great email. Go check out Michael Duff's site. At least controversy still means that liberal people find each other.

*Update - appears my letter to the editor will be published tomorrow in the UD.*

Hey, weird. I have been reading Michael's stuff for years. Weird to see him 'intersect' with one of the DFW bloggers I sorta-kinda keep up with (When it shows up in the lazy-person-empowering sidebar!).

Hey Jacob, you seem to be everywhere! I'm delighted to see Erica's comments printed in the UD (although they had to postpone my own column to run them). It's always appropriate to ask for maturity and responsibility from the University Daily, even when you know you won't get it. I was trying to stay out of this particular fight, but Formby's response was so ludicrous, I may have to sound off. Denigrating the columnists that worked for him? Gratuitous use of curse words? How sharp! How edgy! His comments made the UD look like what it is -- a bunch of kids playing dress up with a university paper. The Lenz column was bad enough, but when a former editor comes out of the woodwork to embarrass himself, jesus -- there's no excuse for that. Thank god we had a few voices of civility and reason published in the midst of all this. Although Chris Mitchell gave this homophobic prick more credit than he deserves.
