Yeah I'm afraid teachers get a bad rap as a "fall back" career in the U.S. My father is a college professor - which no one really respects. But when we used to go to France or Italy, he'd use his faculty ID for free admission to places like museums. It is a respected position there, held in esteem even a little higher than a medical doctor or lawyer.
I feel really sorry for people who don't respect teachers. I guess they never had any wonderful teachers who changed their way of thinking. I always had such inspiring teachers who worked so hard to be the best they could be. They could have done anything, but they took the pay cut and the parroted phrase that they couldn't "do" anyway and made a difference in the world.
