Scorpions

July 12, 2005 - 5:37pm

I'm really excited to be living in the desert. I absolutely love the dry, crisp air and the incredible sunsets. The desert has such a subtle beauty.

The one thing I don't love about the desert is scorpions. Honestly, they scare me. I don't know why, but I've recently been concerned about scorpions in my living space. According to a co-worker, they're very territorial and difficult to remove. But I suppose it's just one of those things that you get used to...kinda like giant cockroaches in Texas.

In situations like this, I think the best way to handle fear is to educate myself. The more I know, the more comfortable I can be. Plus, I'm bigger than them, right? So I started reading up on scorpions. I'm very pleased to learn most scorpion stings are not lethal. I was very displeased to learn the one poisonous scorpion in the United States, Centruroides exilicauda a.k.a. the Arizona Bark Scorpion, can be found all across Arizona. Luckily education again trumps fear and I've learned that no one has died from this type of scorpion since 1968. So even if I do get stung, it'll just hurt a lot. But the dogs might be a different matter.

As someone who has had the unfortunate experience of stepping on a scorpion, just watch where you (and Tiger) walk and you should be fine. And really, on the grand scale of pain, scorpion stings aren't so bad. Worse than a bee, less than a tattoo. :)

Thank you, Amanda. You've helped me relax a bit. Knowing that it really doesn't hurt as much as a tatoo puts it in perspective. And I'll definitely be careful where I walk.

I lived in the Arizona Desert for years, I am not sure how familiar you have become with the Valley, but my father built a house out under the McDowell mountains where Las Sendas is today, he still lives there on a dirt road, so when I was a kid I saw plenty of scorpions and snakes and other desert wildlife. The nice thing is.. they keep to themselves. Scorpions, like cool places, under rocks or pieces of wood.. railroad ties are a perfect spot for them. I have had a few dogs and never once was one stung.. I did however get stung once and for me it was just a little bee sting that got swolen for a few hours. I think that the most dangerous thing in the Arizona desert is the traffic, watch out for the snowbirds this fall :) and.. enjoy ARizona, I know it is hot now, but hey, it's hot everywhere.
