It builds character and it helps you decide who to vote for. You can't begin to understand the problems associated with trying to implement social policy via the tax code, unitl you've tried to do your own taxes. However, it'll never change for the better because there are too many influential people heavily invested in keeping it this way, i.e. tax lawyers and accountants. If you don't believe me, start reading up on trusts.
