MyFi

October 27, 2004 - 6:19pm

Yesterday XM Radio & Delphi announced MyFi, the world's first personal satellite radio. Since I bought XM Radio for my car a few months ago, I've been hooked. I love listening to radio that plays what I want to hear - without commercials. Now I can't wait to have XM Radio portably too.

The design looks good (though I can't really tell how big it is) and I especially like the rechargeable lithium-ion battery. But the best part has to be memory mode. You can record 5 hours worth of radio to bring with you. I've been wanting XM at work and now I can have it. I can hardly wait until December when it's released to buy it!

Given the size of the unit next to the earbuds, I'm guessing the MyFi can't be much larger than a first-generation iPod. That said, I'm curious to know what kind of reception you could get indoors, particularly in steel-framed, flourescent-lit building, like the one that houses the cube farm I work in. I've considered XM for a while, but I just find myself in my car so often that my iPod or the local classic rock station wouldn't suffice. I might give it a shot if my next vehicle (when I'm ready for a new one) comes with XM built-in. But right now, I just can't see spending $10 extra a month plus equipment. Also - do you have to pay per device, or does one subscription cover both your vehicle's system and, say, a MyFi?

I'm confused - does it stream satellite radio live, but ALSO let you store radio for 5 hours? Like if you were on a plane or something? Explain for us not-so-smart people. Or, at the very least, me.

Karen, As far as I can tell, it streams satellite radio live (wherever you can get a signal) and it also allows you to save 5 hours worth of radio (for the times you can't get a signal). M-D, Don't know the answer about the subscription pricing yet. I suspect subscription is per unit rather than per person (if it were per person it would be too easy to cheat the system). However, XM does discount subscriptions for the same household/family. I understand that most people don't want to pay a subscription fee, but for me it's totally worth it. I simply don't have the time or interest to download/rip, sort, and upload MP3's so $10 a month is reasonable for me. I definitely get my $0.33 a day's worth.

Karen - If I remember correctly, XM's satellites are only pointed at the continental USA. But isn't there all kinds of neat digital radio over there?
