Last month Chris and I participated in the MS 150 bike ride (Bike MS) to raise money for the Multiple Sclerosis Society. We had a smaller team than last year but in general there were less participants. (I think the state of the economy played a big factor there.) We had a really wonderful time and got to know a handful of people better. You know, in a way that happens when you ride really far together then stay up late talking all night? Tons of fun!
I'm sorry I didn't capture any pictures while riding. It was cold in the morning, lovely in the afternoon, and really, really, really windy. Everyone was super friendly and a great amount of money was raised for MS.
Very early on in the first day, Paul got a flat tire. It was a good-sized split and loud enough for me to hear it pop. After fixing it, we had some catching up to do so we really started cruising. A couple guys decided to cruise with us and everyone got into a pace line taking turns in the front to protect against the wind. Jeff and Mark are brothers. Jeff lives in Phoenix and Mark lives in Iowa. We had a great time talking and riding together. When we got to the rest stop, Mark got off his bike and it was immediately clear that he is living with MS. In talking with Jeff, we learned that both his brother, Mark, and their sister have MS. It was a timely reminder of why we do this ride. We must find a cure for MS and help those living with it today. I felt blessed to have met Mark and Jeff and heard their story. Who knew something like a flat tire could lead to that opportunity.
Our team raised $5,665 this year! I'm very glad we participated and appreciate everyone who donated on my behalf. Thanks to Vicki, Brad, Ryan, Vanessa, Mom & Dad, Larry, Kara, and Karen for donating!
