Movie directors/writers need to realize that the general public doesn't want to see movies about movies. We want something to take us away from reality for a few hours. We want a well rounded, thought out story. We want some entertainment.

You didn't like it? Sure, it didn't have any real plot, but it sure as hell takes you away from reality for a few hours. Far, far away from reality.

In Lynch's defense I don't think he intended it as a popular movie. It's certainly hasn't hit any of the popular movie theaters. Places like Landmark and the Angelika are wild cards.
