How do you clean fruit and vegetables?

July 13, 2006 - 8:12pm

A conversation came up this weekend with my mom and sister about cleaning fruit and vegetables. I wash them with soap (usually liquid dish soap since its in the kitchen) and water. My mom and sister simply rinse with water. I've also heard of people disinfecting with a bleach and water mixture or some other commercially available disinfectant.

What do you do?

Soap & water, always.

Rinse in cool water, wipe clean with paper towel.

Really? You use soap?

Well, since you asked, in my ideal world, I scrub them with a vegetable brush under warmish water, with NPR in the background if I'm alone, or some sultry bluesy something or other if I'm cooking with someone. And since it's my ideal world, let's assume that all my cooking implements are Le Creuset and that my nails are perfectly manicured... Anyway, back in RealityLand, the truth is that I did the veggie brush thing for a couple of years, and then my ex used it while washing dishes-- scrubbing butter out of a pan-- about 18 months ago ("that's not a dish brush?")... I threw it out and haven't bought another one. Now, I just rinse them, if I'm not feeling too lazy to be bothered.

Ideally I should use soap and water (most pesticides aren't water soluble so water alone doesn't really do much). However, I'm lazy and usually just rinse them with water.
