"Hi, this is Erica Lucci."

April 8, 2004 - 5:08pm

It occurred to me this morning that when I call people, I almost always say, "Hi, this is Erica Lucci" instead of saying, "Hi, this is Erica." Most of the time, it's the appropriate thing to say since the person I'm calling doesn't know me all that well, or we don't talk often enough to be casual. But occasionally, the person on the other line will mock the fact that I'm introducing myself by my full name. It always makes me feel like a big freak. Because my life is a big blur of work and school, I get stuck in a loop. I'm becoming a robot!

well, i say good for you for introducing yourself when calling. far too often people call and simply say "hi, can i speak to [so-and-so]." that's when i respond "got a quarter?"

If it makes you feel any better, you are neither a freak, nor alone. If you want freaky, you should meet my friend Fantasha, who introduces herself when calling people as, "Hello, this is Fantasha Denise Jones." Even when I know it's her from the caller ID, and I answer the phone, "Hello Fantasha," she replies with, "Hello Jeff, this is Fantasha Denise Jones." WIth her it's a compulsion. You are not a robot. The names above have been changed to protect the innocent. Except for my nime, obviously.

Me too. I always answer, "Hello, this is Dave," which isn't quite the same as answering with my full name, but gets the same "you're weird" response when it's a friend of mine calling. It makes me feel like I'm part of The System, but I choose to think of it as just a habit, instead.

I think it's probably a reflex from work phone etiquette. There are a lot of times when I almost answer my home phone or cell phone "This is Noor" instead of "Hello." When I used to do tech support in college, I always wanted to say, "Thank you for calling XYZ Internet," because I would say it so often during the day.
