Fly or Drive?

October 24, 2007 - 5:03am

We're finally getting around to buying plane tickets for Christmas. We're going to go back to Texas for a week. Tonight when I looked at tickets, I choked a bit. Tickets for our dates were $330 - 540! Yikes! So for the two of us, that means spending somewhere between $660 and $1080. Wow, that's a lot of money.

The drive to Dallas is a little over 1000 miles and takes about 15 hours. (I've driven it three times in total so far.) We estimate it will cost somewhere around $200 - 250 in gas roundtrip. We may or may not need a hotel room. If a hotel room is necessary, we can easily add another $100 - 150. That's still about half the cost of flying both of us. AND we could take the dogs rather than leave them here. (We have wonderful neighbors who look after them, but a week is a lot to ask.)

So the decision needs to be made and SOON. Should we fly or drive? It it worth spending 30 hours in the car to save $300 - 400?

If it were you, what would you do?

Road trip! By the time you factor in the time needed to get to the airport, park, take the bus from long-term parking to the terminal, stand in line to check bags, stand in line for security, loiter near the gate for an hour or two, you could be a third of the way there. And once you are there, you have to wait for your bags, rent a car, et cetera. Driving eliminates the stress of air travel these days. You don't have to take your shoes off to board the car. (You can, but it's not required. You can use your cell phone while on-board the car. Meals contain food and are larger than 6 mini pretzels and a half can of soda over watery ice. Yes, ultimately, flying is faster but at the cost of sharing the trip with 180 brand new friends. In a car, with just your partner, that's traveling. :)

I would make the drive. You end up in Texas with a car and your dogs. And you get to establish road trip memories and rituals! Drive! It'll be fun!

Assuming: 1. flying in a 737-400 2. we get 30 mpg in the Honda The 737 gets .41 MPG average. Carrying 150 passengers, the 1050 miles between Phoenix & Dallas, works out to a grand total of 34 gallons of gas used for the both of us. Driving the 1050 miles at the assumed 30mpg in the Honda works out to 35 gallons. Not much difference, eh? Factor in the drive to and from the airport (on both sides), the lowered efficiency of a plane when taking off, and the gas burned on the taxiway, driving is effectively "Greener" than flying. Check my math, I probably forgot to carry a 2 or something.

DRIVE! Not only do you get to learn a lot about who you're driving with, but its a great opportunity to explore new music you might not otherwise listen too. Oh, BTW, since I've done this drive quite a bit myself, one tip... The best BBQ joint in the world exists right off the 20 in Sweetwater, Texas. Its called "Bucks BBQ" Be sure to stop at least once and enjoy the best BBQ you'll ever have!

Thanks, Mark & Roxy! We're definitely leaning towards driving. If we do, I will be focusing on making the road trip fun and not just a straight 15 hours of driving.

We're having the same conversation over here too. I'm leaning towards flying and he wants to drive. Ugh. Why is Texas so freakin big!

FLY FLY FLY... This comes from someone who is not the biggest fan of flying. But it allows you to focus on the vacation, spend that much more time with family & friends. The family (jessica, hannah and connor) and I fly about 6-7 times a year and believe me its expensive, but so worth it. Drove it once, just once and after getting back from that trip I realized its so worth spending a bit more. Besides Al Gore would probably say that flying is far better for the environment. Then again maybe he wouldn't. Just my 2 cents.
