Fight or flight

January 30, 2003 - 6:55pm

Night before last, I woke up around 3am having a nightmare. Of course, it's not particularly scary now, but at the time, I was quite upset. So I called Kevin. I think I woke him up but he might have been half awake at the time. Gotta love caller id because the first thing out of his mouth was "Are you ok? Is everything ok?" He sounded very alert and intense. It made me feel like he was ready to pounce on anything that was hurting me.

It made me realize that Kevin has more fight that flight. "Fight or Flight is a physiological / psychological response to a threat," according to panicattack.net. I, on the other hand, am all flight and no fight. Naturally, I find the fight response very confusing and weird. Yet, somehow, it's comforting to know this is Kevin's natural response (especially at the moment he wakes up). I guess it's probably some primal/architypal attraction thing. I'm attracted to a man with fight response just in case a wild animal attacks us while sleeping in the jungle. Heh. I'll just have to make sure Tiger isn't around to draw a fight response from Kevin in the middle of the night. Kevin would probably kick my dog's butt.

Comments

yes, he probably would.

Very interesting observation. I'm a confronter by nature, and have a tendency to envy the 'poise' and 'elegant avoidance' of the flighters. This makes sense, given the fact that I often feel intellectually afftected by millions of years of evolutionary programming to kill bison and mammoths. Sitting in front of a computer all day puts me in weird moods at night - exercizing has released some of the 'midnight craze' - at least I have yet to find myself wanting to run naked with the caribou [never cry wolf]

I think Denise and I are both firmly in the "fight" camp, which explains why we have such spectacular fights. Though the police have stayed out of it for a while, now.
