Exterior Designer Needed

February 12, 2008 - 10:22pm

Dear Internet,

We know you're smart. In fact, we know you're smarter than us. So we're asking for help.

My parents want to spice up the entrance to their house, but they don't know exactly what to do. They're open to any suggestion and we'd love to hear what you think. Should they paint? Get a new door? Put in new lights? What style(s)?

Here's what it looks like right now.

If you want to, feel free to grab these images off Flickr and edit them. Show us your idea! Feel free to comment or email me. My parents would really, really appreciate it!

Replace both doors with something a bit more modern, yet Texas. The tear down the dark wood panelling and replace with a soft plaster or stucco finish. (probably stucco for the heat.) Update the lights with sconces that will reflect the soft tone of the stucco outward at night to help illuminate the entry way without blinding visitors to the front door. Expand and update the front landscaping with a few well placed small blooming trees, and some new shrubs. Add in a small water or rock feature, but leave the gnome in the neighbor's yard. Finish off the whole thing with a new doorbell of an ancient Chinese xylophone tone ending with a gong!

Chris's ideas are great. Lighting is key!

I also think that right now, the view of the house seems flat from both top to bottom (roofline) and front to back (because the porch is so shallow). If they have the bucks, it would be nicer to look at if the roofline were broken up by one of those peaks (gable?) above the front door, and if there were some depth to the front of the house, so the gabled roof could extend out from the front of the house and be supported by columns, making a bigger, shaded, front porch.

Here's a link to a picture along the lines of what I'm thinking... http://www.mosbybuildingarts.com/portfolio/details.php?project_id=87

But who knows? Maybe it would look strange if it was the only thing protruding from the house. And maybe good landscaping can give the depth that will make it more interesting to look at.

What do I know? Ah, nothing! :)

A gong doorbell is definitely in order for the Lucci house....what better way to say we have guests than a gong announcing their presence...very Adams Familyish! Anyhow, I believe the front door is perfectly sleek like it is.....what I would do is take out the sconces and put recessed lighting into the ceiling to brighten up the doorway (2-3 spot cans). Karen says that some painting will be done so I will not transgress colors etc.

I like the idea of keeping with the pots, but you may be able to find some nice black granite pots to contrast with the lighter color of the re-painted entry way. Greeness is something I always like to see, so some evergreen type plants would be great....and low maintenance...no leaves to deal with etc. Of course I am just an amateure:)
