Expensive

November 16, 2006 - 5:47pm

Found this link about the most expensive house in California from DigitalCatharsis. I thought it was fantastic, so I sent it to Chris. Here's what he said...

"What an amazing amount of wasted energy. Cool, but useless in the real world. Sometimes I think Cali should break off and fall into the ocean. Would the people in Arizona, Nevada, and Oregon start acting like that if all the sudden they were the west coast?"

What's the sq ft of that house? It looks HUGE. Who needs all that space?

Kristen, I don't know the square footage of that house, but to answer your question, NO ONE needs that house.

I don't get your boyfriend's comment. Does he think California is the only place where people engage in wasteful excess? And if large homes and wanton excess are reasons to wish an entire state to be submerged in the ocean, well, I'm afraid our entire country should be resting at the bottom of the sea, given the variety and number of worse crimes we're guilty of than just wasting money on real estate. As far as wasting resources and big houses go, my "Cali" home, like that of most people I know here, is about 1/3 the size of your AZ home, AND I share mine with another person. And we don't even use resources required for heat and air conditioning in much of this state, something that cannot be said for most of the rest of the country. Most Californians I know live in small spaces and live environmentally friendly lifestyles, especially compared to many other parts of the country. If anything, living in a big two story several-room home and having it air conditoned many months each year seems excessive and wasteful. . . As for the wishing CA off to sea, I don't seeing how an excessively large house inspires in one the kind of ire that leads one to wish even one person, much less an entire state, a burial at sea... (p.s. Oregon already is on the West Coast, no need for "Cali" to float off first.)

I can't resist :) Do you ever wonder why California is so derided by all the states surrounding it? It's not California, its Californians! I realize I am painting with a broad brush here, but stereotypes do exist for a reason (Google "I hate California" WITH quotes and you get over 11,000 hits). What other state can have a woman killed by a mountain lion (which was then killed) and have more donations come in for the cub of the animal than the children of the person? As for California itself being so great, the reason other states have a problem with Californians is because they sell their 900 square foot hovel that they paid $40,000 for in 1976 for $1.2 million and then go other places and drive up real estate prices with the need to spend their money. And if California is so GREAT, then why are they leaving in the first place??? As for the clarification on Oregon being coastal, you are indeed correct, though if California DID sink, then their coastline would nearly double!
