In class last night, my professor said, "In general, educated people make better citizens." (He went on to make a whole bunch of interesting points about economics, but I won't bore you with that here.) I'm curious to know if you think he's right.
Yes I believe that educated people are better citizens of the world.. and I think the best education is experience and travel. I think a good citizen has empathy for others and the more you know about others in the world or even in your own neighborhood, the better you will understand thier point of view. Ingorance and fear are a nasty combination.. they are the fuel that spreads hatred.
So.. I agree with your professor :)
I agree with your professor too, unless by "educated" he means "those who possess some sort of formal education." I don't necessarily believe that you have to be educated in any particular "special" way to be a good citizen, but good citizens should be well-informed and knowledgeable about their environment so they can make informed decisions. That type of knowledge doesn't necessarily come from a school; it's acquired from *whatever* resources you may have to prevent your own ignorance.
By the way, there are many ignorant people who have hundreds of thousands of dollars' worth of education, and some of them aren't even good citizens.
"Better" is vague. Educated people are more informed citizens. Educated people are capable of making more informed decisions. I'd like to hear him flesh that out a little more.
I just remembered, your professor's paraphrasing Aristotle.
Sure he's right. Ignorant people make lousy citizens. They vote poorly and generally make bad decisions 'cuz their data sucks. A democracy full of poorly educated people is a mess.
I must agree also. A person can't really be expected to make an informed choice on their life or their candidates if they aren't educated about the issues and the importance of certain stances like pollution reduction.
Your professor sounds like a elitist prick that has had his head stuck in academia for far too long.
Knowledge is good. People whothink it makes them better than others suck.
Here's one "People who believe that knowledge makes them superior to others tend to form elitist attitudes."
Now, if he means better citizens in their capacity to contribute to and benefit from a capitalistic society I can see his point. You have to know the rules to be able to play the game.
I agree with Lauren and k3v...way to note that the prof. was ripping off aristotle, by the way.
Being informed and making decisions accordingly makes a person a good citizen. Having a (or multiple) degree(s) and/or lots of certifications and various letters following one's name have absolutely no bearing on one's quality as a citizen. So, if that's what the professor meant, I hope someone argued against him.
People with common sense make better citizens. Sometimes advanced degrees and whatnot are earned by some pretty dumb people.
However, always makes me chuckle when people jump on the "get out the vote" bandwagon. Bad things happen when just anyone votes. People need the sense to know who and what they're voting for, or it's just not valid. A democracy depeneds on the people with sense, not the crutons who've fallen out of the salad.
It's hard to become a well-educated person, no matter how you define "education." School-of-hard-knocks or academia--getting schooled hurts, and it's difficult, and it costs. Thinking takes something out of you, too. Look around at those you despise (you know you do) who do everything they can to NOT think, to take the easiest way out of everything, to someone else the weight.
