As much as we work towards the milestones in our lives, I can't help but think that there's some part of us that holds back. A part that that is unwilling to exchange the comfort of the present that we know and understand for the unfathomable future. I think that the closer we get to that moment of change the greater the temptation to hesitate or even turn aside completely. A milestone is scary, be it choosing a college or a lover, committing to a faith or a spouse, or creating a business or a child. Scary because we know that we can never go back to the person we once were. But oh, the promise of that new beginning! The catch is that in order to experience the excitement and unparalleled promise of that new beginning, we must first suffer an ending. It is the unwillingness to embrace that ending (despite knowing what it portends) that, I believe, keeps many of us from discovering our potential and realizing our true selves. Or maybe you just weren't in the mood for homework... -AndyS (who finally embraced the ending of the fiscal year and did his taxes this morning)
