Bettina, a documentary film

September 18, 2008 - 10:20pm

On Tuesday night, Chris and I went to a free movie at the Phoenix art museum with a couple friends. I love, love, love the movies at the museum. It gives me a reason to wander around the museum a bit. I saw some new stuff as well as some of my favorite pieces.

Most importantly, we saw Bettina, a film by Sam Bassett. Sam lives on the roof of The Chelsea Hotel and Bettina lives on the 5th floor. They met in the hallway. He helped her clean up her apartment which was being investigated as a fire hazard since she had rooms full of stuff. It turns out all the stuff was Bettina's art. The film is both about her art & life, but it is also about Sam's friendship with Bettina.

It was quite good, even though it was difficult to watch at times. I really, really liked it. I also really liked the question and answer session with Sam Bassett, who was in Phoenix. I only wish that session could have gone on for another couple hours. (Or that Sam could have joined us for drinks afterwards.)

Take a look at Sam's work:
