Grand Rapids

June 29, 2010 - 4:16am

Spent last week working in Grand Rapids, Michigan. It was beautiful there this time of year. Everything is lush and green. Unfortunately for me, it was also humid. My complexion doesn't get along well with humidity. Things went well from a work standpoint and it was a successful trip.

I shared a car with a coworker so I didn't get to explore much farther than walking distance from the hotel. Though, on Tuesday evening I drove to downtown and went to the Grand Rapids Public Museum. It's a lovely little museum celebrating the history of Grand Rapids and this part of Michigan. The collections were fascinating even though I rushed through it in about an hour before they closed.

This part of Michigan is known for the furniture industry, which GR was pretty much founded upon. It still has at least one large furniture company here - Steelcase. GR is also the birthplace of Amway so there was a large section of the museum about the company. Another fascinating fact is that in the 60's, GR tore down it's old city hall building, which was designed by the same architect who did the Texas capital building. Such a sad choice for GR and one I'm sure people regret today. I also learned that Petoskey Stone is the state's official stone and is beautiful. It was a really fun evening to get out of the hotel and learn some new things. I especially enjoyed these chairs in the museum.

I walked around downtown a little bit after the museum. After all, it doesn't get dark until almost 10pm here. I stumbled upon hundreds of people dancing in a park. It was such a fun thing to watch! Turns out the GR Original Swing Society puts the event on every Tuesday. It was quite fun to watch.

Early in the week I read the book, Move A Little, Lose A Lot. Big thanks to Roxie, who mentioned it. The premise of the book is that many of us spend too much time sitting and not enough time moving around. I know this is my problem and why I currently weigh more than I should. The author puts together a plan to get you moving more without making you commit to an unsustainable exercise program. I am inspired me to walk more! So I walked a lot last week and really enjoyed it. Here are a couple pictures from my walks.

Left Grand Rapids on Friday and met Chris in Los Angeles for the weekend. Back in Phoenix now. Funny thing is I'm going back to LA in the middle of the week for work. Looking forward to a long weekend over July 4th and just hanging out at home with Chris and the dogs.

Memorial Day in Chicago

June 27, 2010 - 3:51pm

Last month I spent a few weeks working in Chicago. Chris and I took the opportunity to spend Memorial Day with Chris' sister's family. Caren and Craig are amazing hosts. They have a huge house and are always welcoming people over. It was such a fun weekend as we got to spend time with Abby & Audrey, our nieces, and met a handful of Caren and Craig's friends. We even had the good luck of getting together with Cinnamon and Andrew.

    Highlights
  • Taking Abby & Audrey to the Shedd Aquarium - We had so much fun. They were such troopers as we spent 4 hours at the aquarium, walked all around, and took the train back home. I especially enjoyed all the fun conversations we had about sea animals. Kids make us look at the world in a different way. Our nieces are awesome!
  • Craig's cooking - Craig is an amazing cook and we ate like kings all weekend long. The first night was all seafood - oysters, shrimp, mussels! He also ordered a roast pig half. Yum.
  • Sushi Mike at Tanoshii - I've visited the famed Sushi Mike once before with Cinnamon and Andrew. This time was extra special as we tasted numerous new & original dishes. The most special one was inspired by a recipe from Cinnamon's cookbook, Everything Cast-Iron Cooking. I know this was an honor for Cinnamon and I felt lucky to be there. The whole night was magical.
  • Relaxing - Sometimes when visiting friends and family, we can get carried away with fitting too many things into a short amount of time. This trip everyone was very relaxed. I read a book! We hung out with the girls. We sat around and talked. It was perfect.

Tough

June 24, 2010 - 12:51am

Briefly talked to Kristen on the computer today. Here's what she had to say about Braydon...cracked me up!

"We were walking into daycare and he was running. He tripped on the door and landed on his stomach in front of the receptionist. He jumps up and says "I'm tough...I'm OK" then brushed off his tummy. It was so cute!"

Sleeping on the Porch

June 18, 2010 - 2:58pm

Summer is here and the weather is warm. A couple weeks ago it was so lovely at night that we decided to sleep on the porch bed. From a weather standpoint, it was perfect. There were two things that made the porch a less than perfect spot.

1. Stewie gets excited by any noises in the neighborhood. It felt like all night long he was jumping off the bed to run around the yard. Every time he jumps off, the bed swings. Needless to say I woke up a lot that night.
2. On the porch, we wake up when the sun comes up. Since its summer, that means waking up at 5:30am. That's much earlier than I prefer to wake up on a Saturday.

Hummingbird

June 14, 2010 - 10:05pm

We got a new hummingbird feeder on the back porch. Chris just captured this great picture of a little bird visiting it. Can't wait to see more at the feeder!

Chicago Blackhawks Win the Stanley Cup

June 10, 2010 - 5:17am

I'm not a huge sports fan but having worked in Chicago for the past few weeks, I couldn't help but pay attention to hockey. The Chicago Blackhawks have been playing the Philadelphia Flyers in the finals the past few weeks. Tonight, the Blackhawks won. It's their first Stanley Cup in 49 years. I knew there was a game but I wan't watching it. From my hotel room tonight, I learned the outcome. Clearly the Blackhawks had won because the streets in downtown erupted in noise.

There was horn honking, yelling, sirens, air horns, motorcycles revving, and more honking. It's been going on for a couple hours now. I finally decided to go to the street and enjoy some of the craziness.

Please Watch for Cyclists

June 9, 2010 - 2:20pm

In the Phoenix area, two cyclists were hit by cars and killed last month. This is a tragedy for everyone involved. We all need to be safer and more careful. Cyclists are the ones who lose big when an accident occurs. All of us who drive cars need to be extra aware of cyclists.

These pictures are of the ghost bike memorial for Chris Volpe at University and Ash in Tempe where he was killed. Ghost Bikes are small and somber memorials for bicyclists who are killed or hit on the street. Another ghost bike was installed for Jay Fretz at Alameda and McClintock.
