MS150 Training Ride

February 28, 2009 - 9:22pm

This morning I did a sponsored training ride for the MS150 Ride. Thanks to Discount Tire & Landis Cyclery for sponsoring a wonderful breakfast after the ride! I rode one of the shorter routes at 18 miles (and struggled because so much was up hill). But it was good training! I had a nice time hanging out with everyone from the AZFixed team afterwards.

You can sponsor me for the ride at the end of March by donating to the MS Society. Go to http://main.nationalmssociety.org/goto/ericalucci. I've raised $325 so far. Thanks to everyone who has donated!

Monday Commute - 33 miles

February 25, 2009 - 12:47am

Chris's parents came to visit over the weekend and we had a really lovely visit. Unfortunately I didn't get any cycling in. However, we did do quite a bit of walking and the weather was perfect to be outside.

On Monday I rode my bike to work. It was so warm I didn't wear a jacket. That was a nice change because I really, really hate the cold. (To put it in perspective, cold is in the low 40's and on Monday it was in the high 50's...I love Arizona's winter!) The ride was pretty normal except that I'm feeling stronger. There's a big hill within the first few miles of my trip and I noticed that I wasn't winded until I got 3/4 of the way up the hill. This is a big improvement for me!

I was also pleased to run into another young commuter (a 20-something male on a single speed no helmet or bike specific clothing) about halfway to work. I stopped behind him at a light and to be honest, I don't think he knew I was there. That's the funny thing about bikes. They're so quiet, you can easily sneak up on someone. Especially with plenty of loud cars around. I should have said good morning to this commuter, but I felt shy and didn't say anything. He did brighten up my day though!

Bike commuter 2-23-09

After work, I rode to Tempe to attend a class at the bike co-op. I learned how to remove, repair, clean, and replace the bottom bracket. It was a good class though I was a little more tired than normal. I think I need to pay more attention to my diet when I'm riding this much. I either didn't eat enough or didn't eat the right stuff on Monday evening. On my way to Tempe, I saw another bike commuter as I was on a bridge going over the expressway. He (late 30's with helmet and lots of spandex) was going the opposite way and we only had a moment to greet each other.

I also had my second encounter with direct harassment while riding. A teenager leaned out of the passenger side of the car and barked at me like a dog. There was laughter from the other teenagers in the car. I suppose he was just trying to be funny. The first encounter was a few weeks ago when I was locking my bike up at a grocery store. Some teenage boys walking by made sarcastic comments about how "hot" I looked. (My bike helmet isn't a fashion statement.) Ahh, random teenage boys harassing me in the street means I'm definitely old.

After class at Bike Saviours, I went out to the polo court and caught up with Chris. Polo was played until the park closed then we went home. We went to bed pretty late so I drove to work today (in order to sleep a little more). Chris opted to ride to his work so I'll be picking him up and driving him home. I think we're getting a nice little system going though I wish we could do more riding together.

Thursday

February 20, 2009 - 5:35am

Rode to work again this morning. Though it was hard to get motivated. It was cold outside (40 degrees) and I was a little sore from yesterday. Once I got on the bike, it really wasn't a big deal. Just rode to work.

After work, went to a private showing of Tyson Crosbie's latest artwork. The series is Phoenix 21. It's great; really great. I'd especially like to have number 15. It was a lovely party - just the right size and a lot of great people. It was especially wonderful to hang out with Kelly! I only wish we could have stayed out all night long.

This weekend, Chris's parents are coming to visit. I'm really looking forward to seeing them as it's been quite awhile. It will be great to just hang out and have fun together. They'll be here Friday afternoon and stay through Sunday lunch.

Commute to Work

February 19, 2009 - 4:07am

I rode my bike 17 miles to work this morning. After work, I went to a wine bar with a group of ladies for our book club. Since it was 8:15pm when book club wrapped up, I got a car ride home. I feel a little bad that I didn't ride, but I'm not a huge fan of riding in the dark by myself. Plus, I get more time with Chris before we go to sleep. So it all works out.

41 Mile Ride on Presidents' Day

February 17, 2009 - 4:19pm

Bike ride 2-16-09

Since I had Presidents' Day off from work, I decided to take the opportunity to get a long bike ride in. The bike co-op in Tempe was having a class on headsets, so I rode from my house to Tempe. It took about two hours, though the route I chose was for the enjoyment and not efficiency. It was a gorgeous day and I thoroughly enjoyed slowly winding around neighborhoods in the mountains.

In Tempe, I met up with Chris who had just finished some school work. We ate a snack then swung by a bike shop before going to Bike Saviours, the co-op. The class was great. I learned how to take a headset apart, clean it, then reassemble it. (The headset is the part that allows you to steer the bike.)

After class, I rode from Bike Saviours to the new polo court. (The new court is at a park in Phoenix that has a tennis court adjusted for roller hockey. This is an improvement over the parking lot used before.) This last part of my ride took my total mileage up to 41 miles. So far, this is the most I've ridden in one day. I'm feeling very confident that I can do the MS 150 without any problem.

Chris & Erica's 2009 Charity Event

February 16, 2009 - 6:19pm

As you may remember, last year Chris and I raised money for AASK through an event called Fund-a-stache. Chris grew a mustache and you all donated money to a non-profit that is near and dear to my heart (since I volunteer through AASK). Thank you, thank you, thank you!

MS 150

This year, we're raising money for the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. On March 28-29, we will be riding the Bike MS: Round Up Ride 2009. It's a two day ride of 150 miles; however, my personal goal will be to ride 101 miles total.

Chris and I are a part of a team - AZFixed. This team is made up of the people who exposed us to fixed gear bikes and have gotten us riding more and more. I'm excited to raise money with our friends and am looking forward to spending a weekend riding with them.

Since the ride is only a few weeks away, I'll be training more and more. I'll be sharing that stuff here (as usual). I hope you can be excited for me and for the cause. If you're able to donate, thank you very, very much.

Canalscape Symposium

February 10, 2009 - 7:00pm

Canalscape Symposium

On Friday, I went to the Canalscape Symposium during my lunch break. It was a day-long discussion about making the canals in metro Phoenix a center-piece to our city. I heard about the symposium through a random invitation on Facebook. (Thanks to the person who sent it!) I was a bit surprised that Chris hadn't heard of it since he's taking urban design classes at ASU and ASU sponsored the symposium. Chris also attended for a couple of hours in the morning, but then had to leave for class later in the day. This topic is fascinating to me and I wish I had taken the entire day off work to attend.

While I was there, I only heard a couple of talks. One was by a landscape architect who proposed a number of development projects for more evident intersections of the canal paths with main roadways. For those of you who don't live in Phoenix, canal paths are recreational pathways along side the canals. Typically they are used for walking, running, or biking; however, I get the impression they aren't used enough. The idea was to make the entrance to the canal paths more welcoming. He also spoke about adding more shade structures and water fountains along the paths which would make them more useful in the warmer months.

Model - Solar Screens

The second talk I heard was about how we seemed to have forgotten the fundamentals about sun. The buildings we build have no concern at all for the path of the sun. The gentleman had two models on display which map out the path of the sun (in our region). He wants architects and designers to make buildings which are optimized for the sun so that we use less energy. People want to go from 105 degrees outside to a comfortable 83 degrees inside, which uses a lot of energy. With the use of shades, you create zones of different temperatures which can lower the energy used to cool.

Canalscape Symposium

While I was only able to spend a short amount of time at the symposium, I was very impressed. I'm glad ASU is sponsoring these types of events that will impact my city. And selfishly, I'm really thankful that I got to visit PURL, Phoenix Urban Research Lab. The building is beautiful and just last month I was admiring it when Wayne and I walked by. Getting to be in the building and stand on the balcony I had been admiring felt very fateful.

Sick

February 9, 2009 - 9:07pm

Sunday morning I woke up feeling achy and cold. I'm now seeing all of Monday from bed. I've got a cough, a fever (99 degrees), chills, and aches. I'm grumpy and whiny. I wish Chris was home from school to take care of me.

I'm really, really glad this only happens once a year.

Bike Saviours Benefit Party

February 2, 2009 - 10:12pm

Friday night the Tempe bike cooperative, Bike Saviours, had a benefit party. There was music, a bake sale, bike jousting, carnival games (like blow darts!) and general bike fun. We had a great time and bike co-op raised money which will go towards liability insurance, utilities, new tools, and other general operating costs (rent, accountant, lawyer, fire/building codes, maintenance, etc).

You can see all our pictures from the party - Bike Saviours Benefit - Jan. 31st
